Introduction
The Learning Management System (LMS) in uKnowva HRMS helps organizations create and manage learning activities, quizzes, assessments, and question banks from within the HRMS platform. As part of quiz management, you can organize questions into different categories to make it easier to structure quizzes and control how questions are selected.
A Question is an individual assessment item that an employee or learner needs to answer as part of a quiz. Questions can be maintained in the question bank and organized into different categories based on the subject, topic, difficulty, training area, or any other structure required by the organization.
A Question Category is a group or classification used to organize questions within the LMS. You can use question categories to define which questions should be included in a quiz and how many questions the system should automatically select from each bank category. This makes it easier to create quizzes with a controlled mix of questions without manually selecting every question.
In this article, you will learn how to access Question Categories in the LMS in uKnowva HRMS, create a new question category, configure its question pool, edit existing categories, mass edit categories, and delete categories when they are no longer required.
Step 1: Open the Quiz Dashboard
Log in to your uKnowva HRMS instance and access the LMS from the side navigation panel. Click LMS and then select the Quiz Dashboard sub-menu.

The Quiz Dashboard will open and display the available quiz management options through tabs at the top of the page.

From these tabs, select Question categories.

The Question Categories page will open and display the existing question categories available in your LMS. From this page, you can create new categories, modify existing categories, update multiple categories at once, or delete categories that you no longer need.

Step 2: Add a New Question Category
To create a new Question Category, click the + New button available above the Question Categories list.

uKnowva HRMS will open the category creation page. The page contains two tabs: Main Settings and Question pool.

You can use these tabs to define the basic information for the category and specify how the system should automatically select questions from the question bank.
Configure the Main Settings
The Main Settings tab contains the primary information required to create the Question Category. Start by using the Quiz drop-down field to select the quiz for which you want to create or associate the question category.

Next, enter a suitable Name for the category. Choose a name that clearly identifies the topic or purpose of the questions so that you can easily recognize the category when managing quizzes and question banks.
Enter the Question time limit to define the time allowed for the questions associated with the category. Then enter the Question count to specify the number of questions required for the category.

You can also enter a Description to provide additional information about the category. Use this field to describe the topic, purpose, or type of questions included in the category, especially when your LMS contains multiple question categories.

After entering the required information, move to the Question pool tab to configure the questions that the system should select automatically.
Step 3: Configure the Question Pool
The Question pool tab allows you to automatically add questions from the question bank instead of manually selecting individual questions. This is useful when you want a quiz category to draw a specific number of questions from one or more bank categories.
In the Bank category drop-down, select the question bank category from which you want the system to select questions.

After selecting the bank category, enter the required number of questions in the Question count field.
The Question count determines how many questions the system should select from the selected bank category. For example, if you select a bank category containing several questions and set the Question count to 5, the system will select five questions from that category.

If you set the Question count parameter to 0, the system will select all questions available in the selected bank category.
If you set Bank category to - None -, the corresponding question pool section will be ignored. Therefore, select an appropriate bank category whenever you want the system to automatically source questions from the question bank.

You can add multiple question pool entries when you want to source questions from different bank categories. Click the + button to add another row and configure another bank category with its required question count.

If you want to remove a question pool row, click the X icon under the Action column.

An alert will appear asking you to confirm the deletion. Confirm the action to remove the selected row from the question pool configuration.

Once you have configured the required question pool entries, review the settings to ensure that the selected bank categories and question counts match your quiz requirements.
Step 4: Save the Question Category
After entering the Main Settings and configuring the Question pool, save the new Question Category.
Click Save & Close if you want to save the category and return to the Question Categories list. Alternatively, click Save if you want to save the category while continuing to work on the page.
Once saved, the new Question Category will be available in the Question Categories list and can be managed from the Question Categories page.
Step 5: Edit an Existing Question Category
If you need to modify an existing Question Category, locate the required category in the Question Categories list.
Click the name of the category to open it in an editable format.

The category details will open, allowing you to modify the available settings.
You can update the category information, question count, question time limit, description, or question pool configuration as required.

After making the necessary changes, click Save to save the updated Question Category.
Step 6: Mass Edit Question Categories
uKnowva HRMS also allows you to update multiple Question Categories together using the Mass edit option. This can help when you need to apply the same question time limit or question count to multiple categories instead of opening and updating each category individually.
To mass edit categories, select the required categories by clicking the checkboxes available next to their respective ID values in the Question Categories list.
After selecting the required categories, click the Mass edit button available above the list.

A pop-up window will appear with the fields that you can update for the selected categories.
The pop-up includes Question time limit (seconds per question) and Question count. Enter the required values in these fields based on how you want to update the selected categories.

Once you have entered the required values, click Apply to apply the changes to the selected categories.
If you do not want to apply the changes, you can click Clear to clear the entered values or click Cancel to close the pop-up without applying the changes.
Step 7: Delete Question Categories
If a Question Category is no longer required, you can delete it from the Question Categories list.
To delete one or more categories, select the required categories by clicking the checkboxes next to their respective ID values.
After selecting the categories, click the Delete button available above the table.

uKnowva HRMS will display an alert asking you to confirm the deletion.
Click OK to confirm the action. The selected Question Categories will then be deleted from the list.

Before deleting a category, make sure it is no longer required for the relevant quiz or question management process, as deleting it can remove it from the available category list.
Conclusion
That’s it!
You’ve now successfully learned how to manage Question Categories in the LMS in uKnowva HRMS.
By following this process, you can create question categories, organize questions through the question pool, and automatically select questions from different bank categories according to your quiz requirements.
